How Often Should You Take CBD Oil?
There are many benefits to using CBD oil, from curbing negative thought processes to upgrading your sleep quality. And because CBD oil comes with a dropper, you’re fully empowered to customize your CBD dose.
But it can be difficult to know when to take CBD oil and how to choose the right dose.Whether you’ve just bought your first container of CBD oil or your fiftieth, you can find the right frequency of use by learning more about CBD, understanding the most healthy approach to dosage, and surveying your wellness goals. In this short guide, we’ll help you find your own ideal CBD routine.
How Does CBD Work?
So how does CBD work in the body? Before discussing the perfect frequency of dosage, it’s helpful to understand how CBD interacts with your body. CBD (short for cannabidiol) is one of the chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant. What separates CBD from its sister compound THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is that it has no psychoactive effects.
That means you don’t have to worry about taking CBD and getting high.
Instead, CBD is celebrated for its ability to assist and enhance positive mental and physical health. CBD can help you by:
- Reducing negative thoughts
- Improving and stabilizing your mood
- Promoting positive sleeping habits
CBD is processed through your endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is instrumental in supporting many bodily functions such as sleep, concentration, mood, inflammation, appetite, and response to discomfort.
There are two kinds of receptors within the endocannabinoid system, known as the CB1 and CB2 receptors. The CB1 and CB2 receptors detect when your body needs extra support in the functions supported by the endocannabinoid system. When that happens, your body creates its own natural cannabinoids known as “endocannabinoids” to maintain balance and wellness in your body’s natural systems. CBD works with these cannabinoid receptors to support your body’s production of endocannabinoids.
The endocannabinoid system is always functioning whether or not you use cannabis products. CBD simply gives the system a helpful push, which in turn promotes positive endocannabinoid production and wellness from the inside out.
Determining the Right Amount for You
So, how can you best harness these beneficial effects?
CBD oil is available in many forms, but it’s most commonly found in a small vial with a dropper, atomizer, or pump top. The label should include a recommended dose. This is a great place to start.
If a CBD brand does not include a recommended dose, it might not be reliable. It will be hard to figure out how much CBD is in the bottle and how much works for you!
At Rya, our CBD oils come with a recommended starting dose of 10mg.
Whatever the suggested dose, we recommend that you also take a few days to find the dosage that works best for you. This is because the dosage can change based on a variety of factors, including:
- Activity level
- Reason for using CBD
- Height
- Weight
- Metabolism
If you’re a new user, start with a small dose of CBD oil, then adjust until you’re able to feel a noticeable difference. Though it may take a few days to determine your dosage level, this process is important. Without an adequate dose, you may not feel CBD’s positive effects.
Once you’ve determined the right dosage for you, you’re ready to move onto the next step— establishing the frequency of dosage.
Tip – It may be helpful to take notes during your first week with any CBD product. Track the timing of dosage and amount used each time. Then, after two hours, write out the changes felt.
How Often Should You Take CBD Oil?
For new users, it can be difficult to know when to take CBD. While dosage itself is dictated by your biology, the frequency of dosage is generally dictated by your wellness goal
We’ve prepared a list of common uses for CBD and the best way to time your CBD ritual. As with dosage, these are not hard and fast rules. Instead, these are general guidelines you can follow if you’re inexperienced with using CBD oil.
A bit of experimentation and deeper inner listening will help determine the best frequency for you.
Mood Improvement
For those using CBD to promote general wellness and improved mood, CBD oil is best used throughout the day. We recommend taking a dose with your meals.
Why eat before taking CBD? It won’t upset your stomach. Instead, CBD absorption is increased when taken with meals, especially foods high in healthy fats (avocadoes, coconut oil, etc.).
- Morning – Take CBD with your coffee rising elixir and a hearty breakfast to get your mood levels up.
- Afternoon – CBD can help you maintain focus on what’s ahead rather than getting caught in negative thought patterns. Taken with a lunch high in healthy fats, CBD promotes stability during the potential post-lunch mood lulls.
- Evening – Use CBD to help de-stress after a long day of work.
- Night – It can be easy to fall into a cycle of overthinking before sleep. CBD oils can help by easing your mind as you lie down to prepare for what’s ahead.
But you don’t always need to plan ahead. CBD oil is very fast-acting. If you feel unfocused, nervous, or uneasy, take a dose of CBD to help improve your mood and clear your mind.
To get even better results while taking CBD, practice self-care. Some essential building blocks of a self-care schedule include following a regular sleep schedule, eating vitamin-rich foods, and staying hydrated. That way, you’ll achieve the best possible results.
Soreness Relief
CBD can also help soothe soreness and chronic pain. How often to take it depends on the type of discomfort you experience and how frequently it comes up.
- Short-Term Soreness – If you’ve just completed a longer-than-usual hike, it’s normal to feel sore the next day! To ward off discomfort, take double your regular dose of CBD and wait an hour for it to take effect.
- Long-Term Soreness – If you’re battling a case of stiff wrists or a sore neck, take a dose of CBD every three to four hours.
On average, the positive effects of CBD oil will last between two to six hours. Understanding your body and how it interacts with CBD is the most important step in developing your personal routine.
Depending on the type of soreness experienced, being proactive in using CBD oil might help. If CBD oil helps alleviate your soreness for five hours, dose again after four hours to prevent it from returning. Remember, CBD oil may need up to an hour to take effect.
You might need more CBD to combat soreness than for mood improvement
Sleep Support
If you’re using CBD to assist with positive sleeping habits, it’s best to take a single dose about an hour before you plan on going to bed. If you’re using CBD oil throughout the day, take a larger dose (about 1.5x) around the same time.
For sweet dreams, we recommend that you take CBD at a similar time each day. Here’s why:
- Sleep schedules are determined by your circadian rhythm and regulated (in part) by a consistent routine.
- That means a regular nighttime ritual (including CBD) can help support healthy sleep over time.
Be sure to use CBD oil at least an hour before bed. Because CBD oil can take up to an hour to reach your bloodstream, its benefits will be dampened if taken when you’re already prepared to fall asleep. It may be helpful to set a daily alarm well in advance as a reminder.
Besides CBD, consider these other additions to your nightly routine:
- Turn off your phone before getting into bed. Blue light is thought to have a negative effect on sleep hygiene and can make it difficult to fall asleep.
- Keep a consistent bedtime routine. Muscle memory and repetition let your body know when it is time to fall asleep.
- Avoid caffeine and sugar for at least six hours before you plan to fall asleep.
Stress Relief
Stress and anxiety affect the body holistically, targeting the respiratory, cardiovascular, and nervous systems. Our bodies can handle stress in small doses but an excess of stress hormones can increase your blood pressure or deeply affect your body in other negative ways.
CBD oil is able to relieve stress and alleviate some nervousness in high-pressure situations.
As a remedy for stress, CBD is best taken reactively, then proactively.
- Reactively – Take some time to determine what makes you stressed, and when you become stressed. Then use CBD oil to find calm when difficulties in your day-to-day become overwhelming.
- Proactively – Once you come to understand your stressors, use CBD oil to induce a sense of relaxation and focus.
You’ll need to adjust your dosage, depending on the level of stress you feel.
For example, if you dread public speaking, you might want to take a little more CBD than you would to deal with first-date jitters.
Note the time of day and environment when you use CBD for excess stress. That way, it’s easier to reproduce the results in the future.
